In reply to a question in the Senate whether any steps were being taken to secure reciprocity with New Zealand, especially with a view to getting Australian fruit and wines admitted to the Dominion on more advantageous terms, Sir Robert Best (Minister for Customs) stated that- the Premier (Mr. Alfred Deakin) and himself had intended to disciue the eubject with Sir Joseph when in Melbourne, but Sir Joseph Ward's return direct to New Zealand prevented this being done. Ho would confer with Mr. Deakiu with a view to opening negotiations.
