ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
THE BROOKLYN SUICIDE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Wednesday. A verdict of death from injuries caused by a gunshot wound self-inllicted was returned as the result of the inquest on Maurice Matthews, who was found dead at Brooklyn yesterday. The wife of deceased gave evidence that on returning from a visit to friends shj heard a shot and found he r husband lying in bed with the smoke of powder floating about the room. Deceased had been in ill-health, and she thought he had been dabbling in horse-racing ana had suffered losses. WOMAN'S SUDDEN EXD.
Dunedin, Last Night. A single woman named Margaret T>verey, aged 4!) years, died suddenly at Carey's Ba,v, near Port Chalmers," last night. Deceased, who has enjoyed good health for many years, retired to bed i; 10 p.m., but about two hours later she complained of severe pains in the ch;.i and difficulty in breathing, death resulting within half an hour. At the inquest to-day medical evidence was given to the effect that death was due to heart failure, and a verdict was returned accordingly.
