Dr. Claridge. Waitara's popular medico, sustained an unfortunate accident on Friday evening whilst returning home on his motor-cycle from a visit to a patient. Through the machine going into a hole in the road, the doctor was heavily thrown, sustaining a broken leg and an injured elbow. He was brought into the New Plymouth Hospital for treatment.
l!y the English mail last week (states the Presbyterian Outlook) word was reeeived ■from "Dr. W. S. Robertson, missionary designate for India, that lie expects, to iivrive in Xew Zealand some tiaie in October. Dr. Robertson is hurrying home to see bis father, who for some considerable time ]iast lias been seriously ill. The same mail brought news that Dr. E. \V. Kirk expects to arrive in the Dominion about 12th o r 13th October, in time for the assembly. Mr. Frank Hyde, proprietor of the Whangnrei Advocate, died suddenly from heart disease on Thursday, while being conveyed to Auckland Hospital in an ambulance. He had been in indifferent health for some time past, and was attended by Dr. King, who was called in to see him the morning before. The doctor decided to send him to tnc hospital, and accompanied him in the ambulance, hut his patient .collapsed on the way and expired before the institution was reached. The late Mr. Hyde came to Xew Zealand about twenty years ago. Kur a time he was on the' staff of the Wellington Evening Press, but subsequently went into business there. Then be became private secretary to Sir .loscph Ward, which position be held until eight years ago. when he went into the newspaper business. First of all he acquired the Winton Record, and later on in turn a journal in the Rotorua district and the Whangarei Allocate. Deceased leaves a widow and family.
The Stratford Post records the death of Mr. W. .1. Daveney at the Patea hospital on Friday. Mr. Daveney, who hai been in failing health for some time past, only decided to seek the relief-of the hospital on Wednesday last, where, in spite of all that medical skill could do, ho succumbed. Ho was at one time a member of the Central School teaching staff, and was for some years in charge of the Pcmliroke Road school, where he i quickly made a name for himself as a t teacher and his genial and kindly nature. His health breaking down, lie rrsigned his position under the Education Board, and afterwards entered tne service of the Taranaki San-millers' Association, a position which he held for some years. At the time of his death he was a member of the firm of Aitchison and Co., of'Patea, and was secretary to the Chamber of Commerce and School Committee, in both of which positions he did excellent work. Mr. Daveney's illness has been a lingering one, setting in some years ago when he met with an accident by falling over the Inglcwood railway-bridge on his bicycle. His death will be deeply regretted by a very large circle of friends.
