(From Our Own Correspondents). HILLSBOKOUOH. 3ne of the moat enjoyable social gatherings tnat 1 have uad the privilege of attended took place in the Egniont Koad ilall on Thursday, September MUh. At tne invitation of Air. and .Mrs. W. 11. Birttiop a large number of friends were invited to ceiebraLe the 22nd birthday of Miss Ivy Bishop, and it must have been extremely gratifying lo them to see their guests, to the number of 120 or 130 heartily enjoying themselves. At l:ie request of Mr. Bishop, Air. J. R. Hill welcomed all present, aad y.iid it was not only a party to celei rate the birthday of their host's eldest daughter, but was also a reunion of his brothers and .sisters, no less than seveij of them being presunt that evening, namely, Mrs. Arthur Lealand, Mr*. Tom Boulton, Mrs. Kred Houlton, and Mrs. Charles Brewer (all of New Plymouth), anil Messrs. J. W. Bishop, 11. T. Bishop and their host. Mr. Bisiiop was born within a mile of where he now lives, and is what can be truly called a succesful farmer.
Tlie very nu.nerous present* proved beyond doubt that Miss Bishop is held i'.i very high" esteem by her friends. Dancing, as uMial, was the principal item, to the beautiful music supplied by the orchestra— Mes-rs. K. Ellis (violin), (i. Lamb and (■. Old (cornet), 11. Tunbridgc (piccolo) and Misses Loveridgc and Bishop (Piano). Recitations were eonliiluitrd by Misses Hilda Bishop and Hilda Holmes: son-rs by Aliss Ida Bishop. Messrs. J. 1!. 11 ill and Walter Bishop. At the supper-table Alessrs. E. King, A. Lealand and Mathieson made appropria'e remark*. Messrs. K. Loeke. L. Bishop, and A. Holmes carried out the duties of M.f.s in a very satislaetory n'anm'r. The c»t"ring was done by Air. A. Lealaiul and was all that could be desired.
WATTAKA. The quarterly meeting of tile "Waitflra Methodist circuit was held at the pa I '- Minngi' on Tlmiwdav afternoon.. The balance-sheet showed that" the income had suffered <*n account of the many wet Sundays in the quarter. Mr. T. West reported that the sod fence round the parsonage property had been replaced by a good wire one, and that the crfst lia'd neon met by voluntary lalvir and subscriptions. The meeting passed a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. West and those, who had assisted him. Mr. \Y. Vii-kers was appointed substitute representative. to the District Synod to be held at Wangamii in November. A vote (if sympathy was passed with'Mn*. Ilownmn, of Lepperton, in her bereavement.
The Rev. I<\ T. Read having accepted an invitation to the Port Chalmers circuit. it was decided to invite the Re/. W. Wills to succeed him. A motion bv ~S\v. T. A. West, "That steps he taken to secure a more suitable .site for a parsonage," was carried unanimously. At flic close of the meeting the representatives were entertained by Sirs. Read.
