AUCKLAND DIOCESAN SYNOD
Vie have received the order of tin proceedings ot the session of the Anglican Synod, which is to be livid in hivkland next week. The S\ n„i| proper will open with the celeiiraiion o: me n„| v -Communion on Friday, (Jciober S, at 10.30, when all the representatives, (iota clerical and lay, are expected to be present. The sermon at this service is always preached by some representative man in the diocese, and is considered a mark of especial honor; and this year the preacher chosen is the Rev. u. K Cillam, viear of St. Matthews. Auckland. In the afternoon of the name day the Bishop will deliver his charge to the Synod in St. Mary's Hall, Parncll, where for many years past the sittings of the Synod have been held; and me ordinary business of tlie Synod will then be proceeded with. In addition to the meetings of the Synod proper, there are also a number of what are called Synodical functions, which add considerably to the interest and educational value of the annual gathering of churchmen in the chief centre of the diocese. These functions include this year: A mass meeting for irirls, held in the Choral Hall on Momiay
- evening, at 8 o'clock, at wliich special e addresses will b ( . given: meeting for - clergy for conference on Tuesday; gathering of the St. John's l College Assoeia- : tion (at the College) o n Wednesday; mass meeting for women, in the Choral '■ Hall, at 2.30 on Thursday; a mass mcet- ■ ing for men on the same day and h ■ the same place at 8 o'clock; missionary ■ meeting on Friday, at 8 o'clock, with' ' a host of speakers; conference of clergy " and Bishop on Saturday mornbig; and ' a garden party given to the members | of the Synod by (he council and headmistress of the Diocesan High School, in the beautiful grounds of the school at Rcmuera. from 3 to 5 o'clock on the afternoon of the same day. The vicars of the cih ; churches always take advantage of the presence of so manv of their brethren in Auckland to ask them to preach for them on the Sunday in Synod week, and all the, Taranaki clergy seem to have been booked for this duty—the vicar of St. Mary's and the vicar of Inglewood (fjor St. i Matthew's; tlie vicar of Waitara for fit. Mary's Cathedral; the. vicar of Stratford for All Saints, Ponsonbv, etc. Altogether those who attend the session of the Synod do not appear to liavc bv any means an ea.sy time, and the visit to Auckland can hardlv he looked upon in the light of a holiday. No doubt the gathering together of so manv representatives from all parts of the diocese for conference must add materially to the deep interest tliev feel in the welfare of the great historic Church thev represent, and must enable them to realise and help personally to accomnlish in (heir several parishes the air's that Church lias in view for the welfare of her people in this dominion.
