CLOSE SETTLEMENT.

WAIAIKA VALLEY "RACKED AfIATNST TAKAN'AKI.

Whilst speaking to the AlinUter for Public Works at Eltham on Saturdav evening. Air. JL Dive, M.P., laid stress upon the fact that the country between Eltham and Opunake was the most populous of,any country district its size in New Zealand. This statement was immediately combated by the Afinister. who said that although he had not seen this district, he would guarantee that a portion of hit* own electorate in Nelson (the Wainiea Valley) was more closely settled.

Ah 1 . Dive stated that there was hardly a holding in tills district over 200 acres in extent.

The lion. Afr. AlcKcnzie said that in the Waimea Valley they would not average more than 20 acres.

Afr. Dive then stated I hat the value of the produce in this district was greater than in anv similar portion of New Zealand.

Air. McKenzie said lie was again prepared to back the Waimea Valley, as the holdings there were well-cultivated fruit farms, and he was sure that the value of the products of a fruit-growing district were greater than those of a dairying district.

The Jlinister for Public Works has promised Air. Dive that he will revisit th° Egmont electiyate at an early date after the close of Parliament.—Star.
