The Daily News MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 27. LAND FOR UNEMPLOYED AND LANDLESS.
The land for which applications from intending solictors is now being invited i»y the Commissioner of Crown Lands, rsOim* particulars of which we published on Saturday, i< understood to be the practical commencement of the scheme outlined by tile Government some time ago, of throwing open large portions ot ; the Main Trunk line country for homestead purposes. It is understood thai; within a few'weeks a considerable aiva of laud in addition to that now open, will lie ready for allocation under improved farm settlement Tha land is to be cut up into over 100 sections, the areas of which will vary from 50 acres to 200 acres. It is all situate within a reasonable distance of the -adway line, the bulk of it lying between the line and the Wanganui river. The land is thrown open primarily to meet the ilenianils of suitable discharged . syil servants, ex-railway and road employees along the line, and generally of landless and unemployed people. The improved farm settlement tenure upon which it ;«< lo he offered, however, means that applicants will have to be carefully exam- | ined. The land is only intended for | people who arc unable to take up areas under ordinary conditions, for under the tenure chosen the Government will assist Mv. lovs by advancing money for the purposes of building and general im provements—bush dealing and fencing. Those possessed of means to do this for themselves will not be allowed to participate in these particular allotments. The land, according to -Mr, J. McKenzK Commissioner of Crown Lands for Wellington, who recently returned from *, I three weeks' 'visit of inspection through the district, is very suitable for close settlement such as is projected. Wurk is also being pushed on as fast as possible in the Waimarino "block, where a number of survey parties are busily engaged. It is hoped that about 40.000 acres will be so far ready as to foe placed on the market hcf<»ve the next bushfcllhig season commences. The uoperative lmshfeljing operation? in the Wailotara block are well advanced, and it is likely that the 10,000 acres will ht ready for the market in .January mxt. The area of three sections will range from 200 to 2000 acres. A givaL deal of bushfelling has been done which will be of considerable assistance to the incoming settlers. Meantime, with respect to the 34 sections in the 'J'otoro district, applications for which clos*' here at 4 p.m. to-day, we anticipate a considerable demand, despite the unaccountably short notice gjiven by thv Department. It is to be hoped that in the future more publicity will be given, so that no intending applicant may denied the opportunity of endeavoring to get the land.
