VOLUNTEERING.
At Wanganui on Thursday evening, the officers of the 2nd Battalion, W.R.V. entertained Lieut.-Colonel Watt, tfie retiring commander of the battalion, at Chavanne's Hotel. Major Hughes presided, and in an appropriate and happy speech, referred at length to tile apli-it-<lid record of active volunteer and militia service held by Colonel Watt, and to his sterling qualities as a company or battalion commander, in camp, field, or drill hall. Major Hughes stated that all ranks deeply regretted the retirement of so popular and efficient an officer is their late commander, and in order to in some fitting manner mark their sense of their high appreciation of his long period of service with the officers, N.C.O.'s, and men of the battalion and 'band, the members of the eight companies and liand, together with a number of ex-volunteer officers who had served under their guest iu days gone l>y. had contributed towards presenting their retiring commander with a purse of sovereigns, and a silver tea set to Mrs. Watt, as a special mark of love and esteem for many acts of kindness and assistance given by her to the Real volunteer movement. In proposing the toast and asking Colonel Watt to accept at their hands these tokens of recognition and esteem lie and his good wife were held. Major Hughes said lie trusted they would be spared to enjoy many years of rest and companionship together.
