Several times he got on close terms, pressing the champion during tile last half mile. The finish was exciting. When 100 yards from home Pearce was leading by three lengths. He suddenly and momentarily stopped owing to something going wrong with his left arm. Day was almost level before Pearce again got going, and his actual win was only by half a length, in 20min lsec,
