TEACHERS' RAILWAY PASSES
TO BE WITHDRAWN. | Those Taranaki school teachers who are in the habit of visiting New Plymouth or Stratford on Saturdays, attending classes in an hour or two's respite from business, and those who come in specifically to attend the classes and till in the rest of the time in various ways, will learp witli displeasure the contents of a circular memorandum from the Education Dvp.i.--nont to Education Boards of the Dominion. The local board had a copy before it yesterday. The following is the obnoxious j clause:—
"I am directed by the Minister to inform you that it' has been decided to discontinue as from the end of this quarter the concessions hitherto made to teachers to enable them to travel free by train to attend training classes. . It will still be open to the Board to apply to the 'Minister for a concession of this kind to meet the temporary purposes of specially arranged short sessions, such as summer and winter schools making provision for approved courses in nature study, agriculture, and other branches of manual instruction as prescribed for school classes."
The Board had an irregular—vpirregular—discussion on the matter, tli<* principal talk hovering around the com•plaint tliat only those teachers using the railway, could get any concession, wliieh guve them an advantage over their less" fortunately situated confreres. Eventually it was decided to request the Department to re-consider the decision.
