TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa"), The Wanganui spring ipeeting op?ns to-day. On account of the sloppy state of lire course nothing particularly brilliant was registered in the way of winding-up gallops yesterday morning. The Wanganui Guineas' candidate, Broadsword, was first out and flashed over four *ur longs in 51 sec., going strongly. TheCanterliury horse is in great heart and is sure to run well. Xylophone, with Freddie Jones up, was responsible for the best gallop of the morning, finishing up a strongly-run six furlong*, alone, in 1.20 l-o. The bay colt has grown into a solid-looking customer and fairly revels in the heavy going. Lady Medallist showed to more a 1vatage than Tawhaki over six furlongs, and is in good fettle. Waimaria and Exmoor ran a niih and a-half at a fair pace. Exmoor is having plenty of work shoved into him. He galloped a mile and a-lialf on Tuesday morning, was jumped in the after-1 noon, fencing prolieiently, and was galloped again yesterday morning. Waimarja is in good fettle, but F.xmoor does not appear to be very bright, although he steps out freely. Diamond Slar went six furlongs in 1.22, pulling up well, and Irish Rifle took a second longer. The latter "blows" like a fog-horn after traversing half a mile. Timothy and llontiform cantered round to the live-furlong post and sprinted three furlongs, the former showing in front. AV. Ayrcs will probably pilot Timothy in the Putiki Hack Race, but the New Plymouth horse would be better suited by a six furlong race.

Bridge and Wiminera wert associated in a six-furlong "go," Bridge on the inside jusi getting lionie in front !r. 1.22%. Wi minora ran wide at the turn home turn and finished under a pull. There is no doubt lie is in capital nick. Shannon Lass moved o(T scratcliilv over a mile, but warmed up to it after three furlongs and ran in from the .half-mile peg in S4sec. . St. Bill galloped seven furlong*, pulling hard, and finished up resolutely. .Wirral was not bustled over two rounds, but went well, All Red to lie bright and we'l and was allowed to run along easily over a mile.

Chase Mali wati much too good for Cauldron oyer a mile run In 1.22%, the hurdler lending her companion home by three lengths. Chase Mab is going great guns at present. C. Pritcliard arrived on Tuesday even-

ing with Mon Ami, Miscast, and the hurdler Whatakura. The latter was responsible for two speedy performances at Ashburton, if the man with the watch is to be accepted as reliable. On the first day Whatakura won over 1% tailes in 3.18 1-5, and the uext day was within a length of the winner of <i I'/j-milc race run in 2.47 3-ii. Such times over hurdles either point to verv easy obstacles or to bad time-keeping. The fences at Wanganui are not vpry formidable. Mr. TI. Eva takes. Wee Trinket down I On Friday- for the second day's races at Wanganui. I Anemone and Mcofle have ken juino-

j ed in company during the last few dflys, the former being smartest over the obstacles.

Dr. Rhimose is reported to be in tiptop condition and his appearance i n the PutilcL Hack Race will lend additional interest to that event.

| Maliutu Mid Roosevelt, singly, wore | galloped six furlongs yesterday, the latI tcr going particularly well. Corouetvd : also got through a light task pleasinglv. The committee of the Wellington Has. I ing Club, on tile application, of the j Otaki R.C.. have granted permission fur the latter to hold their spring meeting on the llorowhemia course at Levin on IHtli an,l 11th of October, the nev course at Otaki not being in a !it sta:e for racing. Belario has bevn jumping well and is in a forward condition. |

The best conclit'onrd ho v *es gar i;)ing at Wangamii during the last f.'.v days appear to be Bmudsword, Wimmern. Diamond Ptsr. foroin-tcd. Lady Medallist and Xyiophen . of the flat racers, and Wnim«;ia an:! Chase Mnb of the hurdlers.

Olias. Jenkins wa-- ridin? :i Itfiu'.!f.il 2-vear-old fillv about :1c \\ aiiTinui course yesterday Th<> vnnii';ster is a full sis!" ■ ln-in-.,•' Snulllinc, and is full of ipi-iii! . That she will turn out a "good on;'" is nbs.iIntely certain.

His irieiuls and the riicinu ,fr;ii"milv will be glail to leani that l r rank i-'lvini. who met with an accident nt the Ttn,|™i. tike.' races, is milking splendid pro«i-.Cs towards recovery. It is expected "that he will return to Tlawera within t\v> or three days.—Star.
