Mr. T. W.-G. McLeod, of MaSterton, is stated to have been appointed conductor of an important band in New South Wales.
The Rev. Silas Mead, a Baptist divine, well-known as the founder of Christian Endeavor in Australia, died in West Australia last week. He was staying with his daughter, Dr. Gertrude Mead, at Perth. ,
Mr. Gresley Lukin, editor of the Wellington Evening Post, one of New Zealand's delegates to the Imperial Press Conference, returned to Wellington from London by the Ruapehu yesterday.—Press wire.
At a meeting of the Duncdin Presbytery yesterday, it was unanimously decided to sustain a call to Rev. R. E.' Davius, of Petersham, Sydney, to the pastorate of Knox Church, in succession to Kev. W. Hewitson.—Press wire.
Dr. Bell, Director of Geological Survey, was the recipient, at Wellington on Monday, of a valuable set of silver knives and forks 1 , with best New Zealand greenstone handles, from the stall' of tlie Geological Survey, to mark the oceasion of his approaching marriage with Miss Beauchamp, daughter of Mr. Harold Beauchamp. Deceased, who was for some years an official of the Hawera post office stall', was taken ill a little over two years ago, and has since then been the subject of a lingering illness. The death of Mr. Alexander Mitchell, an old and respected resident, occurred at his home at Kakaramea on Sunday night, at the age of 73. He had been ailing for some considerable time. The late Mr. Mitchell was bora in Kincardineshire, Scotland, and came to New Zealand more titan 40 years ago. He served in the Maori war,' and at its conclusion took ii]i land at Kakaramea, which he retained until the time of his death. Deceased leaves a wife and two daughters.—Star.
Sir Albert Spirer, who presided at the Empire Commerce Congress in Sydney, is president of the London Chamber of Commerce, a member of Parliament, and of the firm of James Spieer and Sons, paper manufacturers. In church circles he is a conspicuous figure. He is treasurer of the London Missionary Society, and was a memter of the special deputation on its behalf which visited India, la 1882, in company with the late Dr. Dale, he visited Australasia on behalf of the Congregational Union. He was chairman of that union in 180.1, and in 11100 he held the office of president of the Sunday School Union.
The dentil is announced of a very old colonist in the person of Mr. John Appleton. Deceased was.' born in Kent in 18H7. At the age of thirteen lie went to sea, lint 18.17 found him seeking •told at 11-.iU-.irat, and in 1801 lie went to the •'rush" at Gabriel's Gully, Otago. He soon, however, returned to Australia, and in 180S enlisted in Colonel Pitt's Australian Contingent, ami served in that corps during the whole of the Maori War. In 188(1 he settled on a section of land at Opotiki, and resided on it forty years. Disposing of hi„' Opotiki farm he settled at Ellerslie, and a few weeks ago he removed to Mount ltoskill, Auckland, where be died.
