STRATFORD.
(From Our Own Correspondent) The County Council squabble between the East Ruling and the other part 6 continues. Legal opinion lias been obtained from Jlr. Skerrett, K.C., and lie says although riding accounts may be kept for domestic purposes, the eounly law holds the whole of the county responsible for each riding collcctiveiy.
j It is anticipated that by the time the next meeting conies round the East road rebels will submit their allegiance to the Council and shell-rock and Mt. Egmont crushed stone will be as plentiful in the East riding as were the corn stores of Joseph in those Egyptian days we read of. Anyhow, providing they fall o n the chairman's neck and are penitent, thc.v will be provided for and everything forgiven. The Hospital Board hold a special meeting on Wednesday to consider a iettcr from the house surgeon and other things. It appears the Inspector-Gen-eral (Dr. Valintine) lias been here, and jumped on the charges for operations with both feet, and the sound reached the utmost parts of the hospital district and great joy reignetJi throughout the land.
The unexpected lias happened. The alleged fireproof building of Messrs McMillan and Frederic, engineers, Avas not proof against the enemy from inside. The result will probably cost the State Insurance Department £"00 or £SOO to put the owners straight in regard to stock and building. The Trinity College examinations were conducted in tile Technical School and a great number of candidates faced the music, with satisfactory results. At , the conclusion, Mr, St. George gave a musical recital free, wihieh wast of course, largely nttemW. Talking of 'wife desertion, I heard of a man who every night had engagements at liis club, much to the dissatisfaction of his wife. One evening she was out, so he left a note sayinrr foe had an engagement with 'Mr. Brown and might be late. He was early, arrivin" homo next morning at 3 o'clock, anl found another note from his wife: "Got an engagement with Mr. Jones. Be i home some time to-day." He stays home and rocks the baby now. Mr. F. R. Tvrer, file popular master i of the Stratford District High School, has entered the following pupils for the forthcoming exams.:—Junior National Scholarship. II; Junior Board Scholarship, 0; Junior Civil Service, 24; Education Board Senior Scholarship. 4; Senior free places, 31; Senior Civil Service, 1; University Scholarship, 2; Matriculation, 17.
A good story comes from the east. A well-known firm of house decorators! noted for their adherence to the laws laid down by Recliab, had occasion to send their nion out to the land where the sly-grogger pursueth his avocation with more or less success. The men were surprised to see an official su'reptiouslv smelling the contents of oil drums and paint cans, apparently on the search for liquid chain-lightnin". -tie left satisfied that everything was all right. ° The majority of the dairy companies ivill consign this year, as the butter men won't spring over 10'/ a d and the dairyman thinks be can do better. The fheese men arrive next week, and they "ill probably not offer too high a pricr, is they have last year's losses to consider. The Hon; McKenzie will be here next week on public works matters. There are manj hungry deputations awaiting him, and as Sir Joe will probably bring back another surprise packet, we migjt !?et something promised. Euchre parties have raged during the winter in and around Stratford, and seems to have been the means of a lot of healthy rivalry. The local Oddfellows hold the belt at present. The tunnel at Kiore will be completed lext week, and Mr, MeKenzie hopes be running a Public. Works train by the .beginning of December, which will be highly satisfactory to East road settlers.
