THE X.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS. THE'FINAL MARCHES.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The golf championships concluded on Saturday in perfect weather at Cornwall Park, the finals of the amateur and professional championships being contested. The former was won by Arthur Duncan, of Wellington, from ,1. C. Burns, of Auckland, by 3 up and 1 to play, over the full course of 30 holes. The match provided plenty of cxeitetnent. Going out in the first round Duncan was 4 up at the turn. On the home journey Burns played sensational golf, and of the nine holes won the first five, halved the next three, and won the last three, leading after the first round bv 2 up. His 9-holc score home of 30 was the bes't for the week. His golf was not so good in the afternoon, ■while Duncan improved, and at the third hole was all-square. An even match followed until the seventeenth hole, when Burns cracked up, and left Duncan the winner.
The professionnl championship was won by J. C. Clements, of Wangair.ii, who beat F. G. Hood, of Auckland, 3 up and 2 to play. The game was decidedly interesting. Hood's long play was better than Clements' and his pitc'iing was perfect, but on the putting green the Wanganui man was greatly superior to Hood, who missed several easy putts." At the conclusion of the amateur championship, which was followed by a crowd of several hundred persons, the prizes won during the week were presented by Lady Flunket.
