PETROLEUM NEWS.

OPERATIONS AT NO. 2.

i Mr. Berry reports as follows:—TuesI day, tile starting day of tile trial caught us with the pump piping „n out] „„,-;„„ ; to one length being badlv damaged. The ; pump, however, was started at 3.30 p.m., I 'and _pumped over ten barrels per Hour till , p.iu when, the pump suddenly i stopped. Pulled rods ami f.'uml valves ; good, 50 knew there wits s ., : .,ethiii« I wrong with the pump piping. \\ e drew (this, usually a four days' joo u ,, ~,,„: | down, and found one length so cut that it would not hold the oil. Replaced this and lowered again and connected by 3 p.iu. on Friday, and from then on to 3 a.m. the pump worked splendidly at the

rate of ten barrels per hour and again suddenly ceased. These stoppages lose very much time, and although the oil obtained will already more than four times pay the wages, ete, it is not yet satisfactory. The absurd rumor that the casing is over-perforated is worthy of the source fro,,, which it emanated, Iml know that the sand has decreased bv at east half. It must be remembered that the pump was secondhand when •bought, and saw a deal of service at SS'tri2- I ? ,,d2talowWa 8 M « I »

THE HADLEY BORE.

It is understood that borin» re-coni-[menced at U.e Hadley bore, Currin-non road, in the early hours of this morning, the requisite additional tools bavin" come to hand. The present depth of thewell is 2500 feet.

OPERATIONS AT GISBORNE.

Thus the Gisborne Herald, commenting on the Gisborne oil operations : Avery effort should be made to profit by the mistakes of the past. Let there be no attempt to 'boom' the enterprise, no undue inflation of or trafficking in shares, such as in other districts has brought discredit on th e industry and seriously delayed the attainment of effective results. The present striking ..i oil, though it proves the existence of measures, does not necessarily ensure that petroleum is to be got in pavable quantities, and a great deal of prospecting may yet have to be done to thoroughly test the field. Even if oil be struck in much larger quantities in the second sands when the bore goes deeper shareholders would do well to curb their elation and prevent anything in the nature of mid speculation."
