The late Sir Thomas Beat was born at Penrith, Now South Wales, in 1833, and settled in Victoria in 1849. Ha entered political life as a M.L.A. for Victoria in 1873. He was appointed Commissioner for Public Work* in 1880, and fo r Railways 1881-3. From 1892 to 18D4 he was Speaker in the House, and from IDO3 to 1004 held the portfolios of Public Works, Health, and Railways. In 1004 Sir Thomas succeeded Mr. Irvine as' Premier of the Stat?. Last January he resigned the Premiership unconditionally, and at the sun* time" stated that he would not be a candidate for any -Ministry. His place was filled by Mr. Murray.
