To the White Star line training ship Mersey belongs the distraction of being the only sailing ship afloat'which is lit by electricity. This vessel, with about sixty cadets on board, left Liverpool on the 15th July for Sydnev, in command of Captain F. W. Comer, R.N.R., formerly of the Federal Line. She underwent a complete overhaul before leaving Liverpool. An appartus, which bid* fair to revolutionise the conditions under which at the present time a ship's cargo is weighed, is eausing interest in Home shipping circles. Known as the porhvdrometer, it is claimed for this instrument that it will accurately record the deadweight placed on board or removed from any vessel to 'which it is fitted, be it the largest steamer, a barge or a hulk. The principle involved in (he porhydrometer is the incOntrorert : l>le one that a body floating in a liquid of any density, displaces a quantity of that liquid exactly equal to its own'weight.
