AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Melbourne, September 15. The amateur golf championship of Australia was won by the Hon. M. Scott, of Victoria, who defeated Clyde Pearce, of Tasmania, 1 up in the final, after a magnificent contest. • (Tiie Hon. Scott also won the amateur championships of Victoria and New South Wales this year.)
N.2. CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. By Telegfupn.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The third day's play of the New Zealand golf championship meeting ,at Cornwall Park links was productive of some good contests and some surprises. 1 The professional matches were commenced first/, but did not atitraet a (Treat deal of attention, owing to the draws being such that winners could be easily forecasted. F. G. Hood (Aueic- , land professional), on his play today, would have done less than SO had the match continued over the full ' eourse. Clements (the open champion) ■was also playing well. It is expected that these two will meet in the final of the professional championship of {Tie Dominion.
The first round of the match play in the amateur championship of New Z™lland witnessed the downfall of the ho.Jer (H. C. Smith, of Dunedin). he belli;; beaten r oy J. C. Bidwill (of Wairarapa) in a sensational manner by 1 up at the lOtb hole. J. C. Burns (Auckland cha.rpion) unexpectedly defeated 11. B. Wood (Christchurch champion) by 3 up and 2 to play. Arthur Duncan (of Wellington) beat Barraud (of Manawatu) by 4 4)p and 3 to play. It is expected that A. Duncan and Bidwill will have a close
run for the championship. - The bogey handicap played to-day saw some fine golf, and Burns followed tup his morning's win by returning the excellent score of 5 up on bogey from •cratch and winning the match. His round was done in 79. A. J. Abbott (of Wellington) was a good second with 4 Up on bogey with a plus 1 handicap. He Went round in 80. Col. Tuson wis I third, 1 up from a handicap ■ of 2. The second medal handicap result <vas Wrongly given yesterday. S. M. Ho\.'flen was declared the winner by nn error. A. N. Barraud—gross score 84, handicap scratch, nett score 84—and 11. C. Tonks (Auckland)—gross score 97, minus handicap 13, n e tt score 81—being equal for first. The weather to-day was dull, with a cold south-west blowing, but rain fortunately held off.
NGAMOTU CLUB. On Tuesday afternoon the N'gamotu ladies played the second round for Mrs. H. Weston's cup. Following were the results:— Miss' Fitzherbert (24) beat Miss Leath>m (30) 5 up and 4 to play. Mrs. Haslam (30) beat Miss Smith '(20) 2 up and 1 to play. Miss Read won frc... «<rs. Patoti by default. Mrs. Johns (20) heat Miss Brewster '(15) 0 up and 4 to play. Miss McKcllar (30) heat Miss Bewley (30) C tip and 5 to play. Mrs. O.Win (22) beat Mrs. Gunson (25) 4 up and 3 to plav. Mrs. Gray (28) beat Mrs. Weston (30) 6 up and 4 to play. The third round will be played on a day to be decided during the next fortnight.
