FARM AND DAIRY.
NATIONAL DAIRY ASSOCIATION
APPOINTMENT OF HOME REPRESENTATIVE.
The National Dairy Association, Ltd., has appointed Air. W, Ellison, secretary for the Central Co-operative' Dairy Company of Chvietchurch, its London representative, in succession to Mr. Charles Mackie, who initiated the scheme.
Mr. Ellison (says the Tiities) has been secretary of Die big Canterbury company for many years, and has been :u a large measure responsible for its success. lie is a man of distinct ability, | tactful, and of good address, and is an admirable correspondent, qualifications specially valuable in his new position.! The association distinctly fortunate in being able to senile the services,of ■i urnii so well suited for the important work of supervising the sale of the produce of its members on the London market. Air. Ellison's knowledge of dairying Is confined to the commercial end of the business, and the National Dairy Association -is, therefore, particularly anxious that the Home representation scheme of the Department of Agriculture in connection with its industry, which the Dairy Commissioner visited Britain ill order to initiate, should be at last carried into effect. With this [ object ill view the directors interviewed
'the Minister of Agriculture recent'y. Mr. Mackenzie's reply was a sympathetic one, and it is apparently only a matter if cost which is blocking this most desirable mission. It is imperative to the success of any system of j Home supervision of dairy produce that an independent ollicinl—connected in 110 way with tlic commercial side of the industry—should be 011 thespot to speak wiih authority on the matter of quality, it is also necessary to the suecess of the grading system tlwt the Department ■should know exactly, 011 tie. independent testimony of one of its ow n ' ollieers, how the produce is turning out at the Home end. and know, too, the requirements of the llritish consumer, so that, if possible, our system of manufacture may be amended in order lo cater to the Home trade to better advantage. The Association is anxious that the Covennueiit should decide 011 tiie Home appointment of a grader at once, so that he may leave the Dominion with the livst of the new season's shipments, and thus be 011 hand with their own representative to adequately protect the interests of Xew Zealand dairy producers Oil British markets. It is to he hoped that their desire may be yet gratified.
