THE ISLAND TRADE. Bv Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Xight. Mr. J- Graham Gow, Trade Commissioner, leaves Wellington by the Hauroto on Friday for Karotonga and Tahiti to enquire into the possibilities nt trade in view of the establishment uf the Government subsidised steam service now running between Wellington and the Islands.
A MINING CASE. Thames, Last Night. Warden Burgess, in delivering judgment in a case where, after decree of forfeiture had been granted, applicant claimed to have repegged the ground by formally placing hands on tbe existing pegs, stated this was not sufficient to constitute proper marking out. me • previously existing pegs cannot be regarded as marking out. The magistrate held the claim was not marked out according to law and refused the application.
. t ' MINISTERIAL MOVEMENTS. I • Napier, Last Night. Horn T. Mackenzie (Minister for Agriculture) received deputations to-day, one of which urge 4 him to use his raliucnce in having a survey made of tbe East Coast railway between Napier aud Gisborne.
CLASHING WITH FUNCTIONS. Napier, Last Night. Questioned, by a reporter regarding the date fixed for the Rangitikei election, Mr. MacKenzie said the Government had not the slightest idea it would clash with any local fixture; "but it Efeems to me," he added, " that in future the difficulty will be to fix a date of any function without clashing with cl race meeting, football match, or Government holiday. We ought, perhaps, to have a scale drawn up of a few days which may be regarded as free from ' those fixtures." ' A BANKRUPT'S EXAMINATION. Napier, Last Night. The public examination in bankruptcy of John James Patterson, of Dannevirke, solicitor, was commenced in the Supreme Court to-day, before Mr. Justice Cooper. Bankrupt was examined at J length as to various transactions. He I Baid he did not know where Mrs. Patter- ' son was at present, but he would undertake to convey any communication to Iher within seven days. He believed she I iwaa in the Auckland province. The examination was adjourned till to-morrow.
NEW'FREEZING WORKS. Gisfoorne, Monday. A contract for erecting freezing works at Tokomaru has been let to Bull Brae., of Napier, the price being £3P.1000. Seven tenders were received from contractors at. Christchurch, Napier, Wellington, Auckland and Gisborne. The works are expected to be ready by October, 1910, and have a capacity lor handling 2000 sheep a d^y. A BANKRUPT CONTRACTOR. Wellington. Monday. A meeting of the creditors in the estate of John White, contractor, lace of Wanganui and Taranaki, was held to-day. Bankrupt's statement showed B deficiency of £343. He lost about i£3oo on a contract for carting the Wanganui electric tram material owing to the Council's delay in starting and also to the bad roads. The chief securities were a motor waggon at Wellington and an electric motor at Okaiawa, the total value of which is ££7o. The meeting was adjourned to enable the assets to be realised! THE BIG NUGGET. Hokitiba, Monday. The big nugget discovered at Rois lias changed hands for £4OO cash. It was bought By Mr. Pedrazzi, of Ross, and Mr. Free, of Southbridge. The official weight is given at 990z. 12dwt. 12gr. It was inspected by large numbers on Saturday nig Tit. It is to be taken to Christchurch.
