Commander Peary's exploit has given a great impetus- to the American idea of flying the stars and stripes at both Poles. There is renewed talk ol equipping an Antarctic expedition, ALL ROUND THE POLE. PEARY'S OBSERVATIONS. TAKING FORMAL* POSSESSION OK THE REGION. Received September 13, 11.13 p.m. New York, September 13. Commander Peary states that he went ten miles beyond liis cump at the Pole uiul eight miles to the right of the cump, taking photographs and depositing records, and studying the horizon with a telescope for possible land. Commander Peary informs the State Department that he took possee/sion od the entire region on behalf of the President of the United States.
NEXT ANTARCTIC iESPEIiITION. LIEUTENANT SIIACKLETON ASSISTING. Received September 13, 11.15 p.m. London, September 13. Lieutenant Shacklcton will give the benefit of his recent experiences' to the preparations for Captain Scott's expedition, the cost of which is estimated at £40,000. Captain Scott hopes to start in August, 1010. He intends, with a view to investigating the virgin areas, to establish at King Edward VII. Land a second base, 100 miles eastward cf McMurdo Sound and take Manchurian ponies to cariy food to the foot of the glaciers. Their place will then be taken by Esquinieau dogs. The utilisation of improved motor sledges has hecn satisfactorily tested in Norway.
