THE STATE DEBTS. By Oaile.—Prefc. aßociation.—Gogpiijfac Melbourne, September 10. In the House of Representatives Mr. A. I'iulier, cx-Preuiier of Australia, contended that any agreement with the States Premiers would restrict the powers of the Common weal tli, hamper its development, and cuiuiil its ambitions. He agreed that it would be advisable to have one Commonwealth stock, and that it would be so profitable as to enable the saving of a quarter per cent. It was of advantage that the transfer of dcbW should stop. Instead of agreeing to a payment of 2.5s per capita lie would be prepared to vote an even larger sum if the debts were taken over, lie was satisfied if they were taken oyer that there would be a sufficient saving eventually to wipe out Australia's indebtedness. The agreement, be said, should be referred back to another Premiers' Conference.

In the Senate Mr. Pearce moved f-«* a seleot committee to inquire into the methods in Australia of the Press' Cable Association. He accused the service of sending inaccurate reports. The debate was adjournid for a week.
