AUCKLAND DEFEATS TARANAKI.

by Telegraph.—Preis Association. Eltham, Last Night. The Auckland-Taranaki Association game provided a splendid contest. The visitors opened strongly, setting up continuous attacks, the yellows defending vigorously, the home forwards, however, lacking combination, and the backs failing to kick with judgment. Ia t/he first spell Sale scored a goal by tricky footwork. Webster also scored a goal, beating Stapleton, Taranaki scored from a penalty kick, Scholefield by a lard shot beating Bennett. In the second half Mickleson, from a corner kick sent to Sale, the latter heading a 'goal! Taranaki's second goal was scored through Seath (Auckland) turning tie hall into goal whilst breaking up a yel low rush.

Taranaki's play was much better after the first half hour, Scholefield arrl Eggleston doing fine work. Smart was much too slow. James was the bcit local back, Stapleton playing a good game in goal. Auckland gave a good exhibition, and the play generally was pleasing to the spectators, who attended in fair numbers. Mr. Takle, manager of the Auckland team, was referee. SYDNEY UNIVERSITY BEATEN Christchurch, Last Night. Canterbury College beat Sydney University to-day by 14 points (a goal from a try and three tries) to 5 points (a goal from a try). At a meeting of the management committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union an application by the Otago Union lor a loan of £ISOO was refused, no funds for such purpose being available.

The suspension was made general and the persons concerned given a fortnight to show cause why they should not be expelled. The members of the Maori team which toured Australia last year under the Northern Union rules spiled for restatement. They said they had been misled, and had not known they weri. doing wrong.
