The Daily News MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 6. CHILLED MEAT.
In view of the depression that lias fallen on the frozen meat trade and »;i >ws no signs of lifting, it might be p:\ilitable to consider whether relief cannot be obtained in another direction. Dajgety's Review states that stockowners in Queensland arc greatly interested in the possibilities of chilled meat. It says the importance of th e establishment of chilled meat industries, and for special means being arranged to convey meat in good condition to the British and other distant markets, bus become a vital matter. The obstacles to be overcome hi starting such indusI tries, though involving enterprise ami expenditure, are perhaps not insurmountable, and to compete with (lie Argentine and the United States, though they arc already in possession of the f held anil are nearer the great purchasI iug ien Ires in Europe, may not be imI po>-;b!e. The chief difficulty probably I will !:v tli.- shipping arrangements, and * ill ensuring that careful handling rc- | quired to place it in prime condition on ? the market. The greater distance of | Australasia from England than its com--8 petitors for the trade is certainly a. dis- | advantage; but if fast steamships equipI ped with proper v.ntilated msunued 1 chambers at the right temperature can ■ be secured, the meat can lie landed in I London in good condition, notwithstanding the distance; and if the, freights were considerably higher than those paid for frozen meat, the price realised for the chilled meat is much higher. Of I course the change would mean revolutionising the whole industry. But the advantages and increased piolits would probably more than compensate for the ;S outlay 'and dislocation of the present a methods. It is stated that the chilling process is much better than freezing for preserving the meat in a satisfactory condition for the tabic, and in England | chilled meat will fetch more than twice £ tiie price of the frozen article. These > are points that will bear investigation. i 11 may be that New Zealand's distance 5 from the market will make the process f impossible of adoption, but on the other 1 hand some company might with advan- ► tagc to itself ho the pioneer in the r chilled meat industry in the Dominion. I We would suggest to the promoters of f the proposed new meat works at MotuL ron to procure all available information » respecting the process and its possibili-
