Bowling analysis.—Cotter, one for 77; Macartney, two- for 38; Whitty, none for 52; O'Connor, seven for 71. Essex won the toss and Kane and Douglas took up the batting. Cotter and Macartney were entrusted with the attack.
Runs came steadily. At 50 O'Connor relieved Cotter, and olf his first delivery Fane was caught at second slip from the third ball without any addition to the score. *
Turner was tqken at tie wicket. Douglas played careful cricket and batted for one hundred minutes.—Three for 81. '
McGahey, who was lame, had a man to run for him. Gillingham became partnered with him, and a display of bright batting ensued. The century was hoisted in 125 minutes.
The wicket after lunch was easy. McQahey's innings' lasted for 125 minutes. He played a strong defensive game and indulged in hard off driving. The partnership put on 07 in 05 minutes after lunch.—Four for 100.
Carpenter was dismissed with a brilliant right-handed catch high ud at mid-off —Five for 192.
Gillingham indulged in splendid leghitting and driving. He batted for 140 minutes and hit eight fourers. Eventually he was taken in the slips, Cotter making a fine catch.—Six for 219.
Reeves and Gibson played good cricket, but the others were poor, the seventh wicket falling at 249, and the eighth and ninth at 256.
Australia in the first innings has lost one wicket for eight.
