ALLEGED FORGERY AND UTTERING.
YOCNT! MAX COXtXHTTED FOR TRIAL. In the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, 'before Mr. TI. S. Fitzherbert, S.XI., Alfred A. Allen, a ship's stweard, late of Lepperton, was charged with halving forged a document purporting to be mi order from, Alexander Blackwood Waldic for paynieint of £lO, -and uttered the same to Harry Goldwatcr, of New Plymouth. Harry Gold-water, manager of the Auckland Clothing Company, gave evi-, deuce that lie had known Waldie for several years, and tonew lus writing. On the morning of 13th August Waldic and accused icanie to his premises together, the 'former being very intoxicated and flushing a lot of money in his hands. Knowing 'how loose he -was with money when -iit Hint state, he (witness) did him a friendly tuna by talking charge of two £2O notes. Accused -was aware of this, and advised Waldic to -leave the money. Asked Waldic who his friend ■was, amd the .aoeused was then introduced to Ki'm as a Xfr .Allen, who was going on Wahlie's 'farm « cadet. On the I4th and lflhh August the two came ' together to his ,shop, "and on each o-.-ca- j sion lie gave Wnifdic innuiey in accused's : presence. On the moruiai.',' of Tuesday. I I7th August, accused came to 'witness' i shop -alone. Asked him where Waldic 'was. and acKused said he was at home at Lepperton. Witness asked accused what lie. was dotair in town, and the nnswer -was that Waldic had sent him for some money. Asked what amount -was required, amd he said "ten pounds." Asked if iic "had «ny 'written authority to lift this amount, 'and lie said "\'cs," and produced one of Xfr. Waldic's visiting cards, on the reverse side of which was 'written-, "Please give licarer the sum of £lO. A. B. Waldic." (Card produced.) Witness remarked; "Xfr. Wahlie must ha:ve ucen in a terrible state to write like this." Ackmsed answered, "Oh, he's anyhow." In answer to questions, accused informed witness that the money was for the purchase of stores for the house, and Uiat he was goiii« out by the 12.50 p.m. train. The writing on the card was nothing like Waldie's, but, knowing the condition he ■was in, witness thought it might lie his writing.
Accused had no questions to ask, but stated that Jfr. Goldwatcr's evidence. was quite correct. Alexander Blackwood Wahlie. the informant, a farmer at Lepperton, said: "I know the accused. T went Home to Englimd by the Corintfcic last April, and returned to New Zea.liand by the same steamer last -month. Accused nuns a. stewurd o. n that steamer.
