Advice has been received stating that the Federal-Houlder-Shire liner Hornby Grange will take up the. running of the wrecked steamer "Waipara. The Hornby Grange leaves Sydney on September Id for Dclagoa Bay, Durban, Algoa Bay and Capetown. A CURIOUS COINCIDENCE. In connection with the foundering of tlie French barque Gael off Cape Leeuwin, and the subsequent safe landing of her officers and crew, as reported in the cables last week, it is rather a coincidence that, in July, 1902, when the Gael, from Mauritius, made a call at Hobart for orders, she reported having picked up Captain Cauvert and 27 of the' crew of the French barque Villc d'Orleans, which had foundered. Tin Ville d'Orleans', which had -foundered. The Ville d'Orleans had left Glasgow on March 29, 1002, for Brisbane with a cargo of rails, and when still a considerable distance from the coast of Australia, she iwas discovered to he leaking. The crew, by laborious pumping, kept the water in check for 20 days, until, finding the leak increasing, the only alternative was to abandon her. They took to the boats about 440 miles off the South-west Cape, and were subsequently picked up by the Gael.
TURBINES IX CARGO STEAMERS. An interesting experiment has been in progress lately in connection with the use of steam turbines for other than express service at sea. The Parsons Marine Turbine Company purchased a cargo steamer, the Vespasian, in order to demonstrate that turbines arc as suitable for tramp service as reciprocating engines. She was first of all sent out, at the end of June, with four extra engineers, and two coal-weighers. Their duties were to calculate the steamer's speed and eoal consumption with the original reciprocating engines, and they were to do that with the greatest care and seicntifii' accuracy. After an appropriate number of voyages, the Vespasian is to be re-engined with Parsons' turbines, designed to suit the work of the vessel, and she will then be sent out and a fresh scries of tests made. The comparison afforded by the experiments should go far to settle the existing doubts as to the exact place of the turbine in the marine engineering world; and the care anil accuracy which are to qualify the collation (if data should invest the results with the greatest importance.
