A CHAPLAIN'S COMPLAINT. ' By Megraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Thursday
At the Police Commission this moiling, the Rev, Budd, a Church of England chaplain, complained that overzealouc policemen dogged prisoners after their discharge from gaol. He said he I new of cases where men striving to earn an honest livelihood had been distovered ,by constables, and employers ■warned, with the result, in some cases, that the men were cast adrift. He Assisted one young man who had complained of having been dogged by the [slice and subsequently committed. Mr. Bishop, S.M., said he felt sure this was not the practice, and that It «as not approved by either the Commissioner or the inspector. ALLEGED CORRUPTION.
Auckland, Last Night. Constable Donovan stated he had be°.i in the service since 1883. In 1894 he had asked the then Commissioner (Col. Hume) why. he bad 1 not been promoted and the ..reply was that "he had not ancles and aunts enough." He had bees removed from control of the Coromanijel station as the result of political influence. An hotelkeeper there, against whom he had secured a conviction, announced himself as a Parliamentary candidate, and after addressing several meetings withdrew from the contest on the understanding that witness was to l>e removed from the district, and witless was' accordingly removed, despite (he fact that he had been recommended liy his inspector lor promotion in reward for his services. The Hon. Jas. McGowan, ex-Minister for Justice, will give evidence to-mor-jow.
