Mr. Jas. Wade has been re-eleel'd chairman of the Taranaki Education Hoard. Mr. J. Johnston, Government grader at New Plymouth, leaves this inornhg on a trip to Dunedin. Mrs. Duncan Stewart, "whose death has occurred at Xorth Taieri, found her early life in Otago somewhat adventurous. The lirst engagement, Mr. Stewart found was to manage the stock of the station of Messrs. Sinstell and Smith, whither Mr. and Mrs. Stewart sailed in an open tamt. Their only -neighbors were Maoris, and a white face was rare-, iy seen (*avs the Otago Daily Time*). 1 'fhe uatives were very friendly, although Mrs. Stewart was "badly seared o tl oue occasion when a Maori entered the hut brandishing a tomahawk and demanding tobacco, Fortunately Mr. Smith arrived on Hie scene •ami 'placated the Maori with the article lie required. Mr. Stewart subsequently took up the Barewood run, which was then almost in accessible, and communication with him could lie maintained only by bullock teams or on foot. Mrs. Stewart frequently did the journev on foot, and regarded the feat as one of no importance. |
