The Taranaki Education Board continued ite 'meeting yesterday. There were present: Messrs. ,T. Wade (chairman), A. Morton, W. L. Kennedy, W. Rogers, H. Trimble, J. Young, and*G. A. Adlam. Mr. J. D. Morisou was granted lease of absence'. THE RECENT ELECTION.
Mr. P. S. Whitcombe, the returning officer, reported the election of Messrs. A. Morton (North Ward), J. D. Morisou (East Ward), and James Young (West Ward) to fill the vacancies on the Board. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT. The chairman's report for the month was as follows: Appointments have been made in pursuance of the committees interested: Stratford District High School, assistant secondar}' department, Miss E. Bollinger j Oaonui, head teacher. Miss G. C. McArthur. Temporary appointments: Urenui, assistant mistress, Miss B. Henderson; Mangorei, teacher, Miss H. Brunton; Hillsborough, assistant mistress, Miss H. Breen; Opua, teacher, Mr. W. WagetafT; Whangamomona, Miss M. Breen; Hillsborough, assistant, Mr. S. M. Mills. ARCHITECTS' REPORT.
Tiie architects (Messrs'. Sanderson and Griffiths) reported that Uie teacher's residence at Fitzrov had been inspected and various repairs, were needed. Repairs were being effected at Midhirst school. The grant by the Department for additions at Huiroa would just aboiit build the 17ft Gin addition, but would not pay for painting the present building or any repairs to same that may ue required. Plans and specifications had been prepared for a shelter shed at Puraugi.—Received.
AGRICULTURAL INSTRUCTION. I Messrs. Ballantyne and Whetter, InI speetors, reported with referenoe to the , memo, from the Otago Education Board | re agricultural instruction in district i high schools that they were of opinion that the objections raised by the inspectors for the Otago' Education Board with regard to the provision made bv the Department for instruction in agriculture at the district high schools did not apply to this district. They recognised. however, that in some districts where there were district high schools with an attendance so small as not tc admit of two courses being carried ot» side by side, a .percentage of the chil-i dreu would be debarred from qualifying! for*a university career should only'one course in agriculture be instituted. At the Stralford school, the only district high school in this education distr'et, two eourses of instruction had been mapped out—one for those pupils desirous of presenting themselves for the matriculation or junior university examination, or in other words for those who wished to qualify for a university career; and the other for those intending to follow agricultural pursuits or to enter the public service by passing the Civil Service junior examination.—The teport was adopted, and it was decided that a copv be forwarded to the Otago Education Board. A QUESTIONED ACCOUNT.
Messrs. Morton and Trimble reported with reference to the application of the Stratford Committee for subsidy claimed from the Department on the amount of .£OO lis Id raised by the committee I for the purpose of building a sheltershed. They were quite satisfied that the whole of the items making up lie £OO lis Id were absolutely genuine, and that mo moneys wpre therein ineluded on which any subsidy had been previously claimed or received.—The report was adopted, and a copy will be forwarded to the Department. Printing.—That the louder of Mess/s. Hooker and Co. and T. Avery be accepted for printing cheque forms and copies
of new regulations respectively. Cardiff.—That the application for subsidies on two sums totalling £6 lis 7d be granted, the money to be expended in improvement of school grounds. Awatuna. That tho application of the committee for a subsidy of Mii 15* to be expended with a similar amount raised by the committee for tile purpose of clearing and stumping the school
ground be granted. Agricultural and Technical Classes. — That -a second-hand typewriter be obtained for the use of these classes at the Stratford District High School at a cost not exceeding '£l2. Kont.—That with regard to the letter from the committee calling attention to the fact that a large quantity of gorse and blackberry is growing on a section adjoining the school and which is; likely | to endanger the school, the matter be referred to Mr. Adlam, with power to act. STANDING COMMITTEES. The following committees were elected for the ensuing year: Finance Committee—Messrs. Morton, Kennedy, and Young. Teachers' Selection Committee Messrs. Trimble, Adlam, and Morieon, Reserves Committee Messrs. Morison, Morton, and Rogers. The chairman will be an ex. oflbio member of all.committees. THE DRILL-SHED SCHEME.
The Board again referred to the letter from Lieutenant-Colonel Okey in regard to the proposal to erect a drill hall on the .Board's reserve. (St. MichaeVs Square), upon the understanding that tho building would be available f>r school and cadet instruction purposes. The matter was discussed at the July meeting, but no decision was arrived at.
Mr. Trimble moved, and Mr. Rogers seconded, that Colonel Okey's letter bt acknowledged. Mr. Kennedy moved, as an amemlment, that in the event of further information being received from Colonel Okey, the matter of the site for dri'lshed will be considered. The amendment was seconded by Mr. Adlam and carried on a division, Messrs. Trimble and Rogers recording their votes against.
COMMISSIONERS APPOINTED. The undermentioned districts having failed to elect committees, the following gentlemen were appointed commissioners: Messrs. J. If. Smith, Huirangi; F. 11. Svmons and R. Shewrv. Ifurimoana; C. McAloou and J. Drom£ool, Huiakama: Messrs. C. E. Bacon and T. Davis. Marco; ,T. B. Norris and C. P. Barker, Mangaehu; W. K. Jonas and James Stocklev. Mohaknu; .1. S. Fox and A. H. Metcalfe. Oka to; H. B. Worthington. Pnniwhakau; W. Hatnawav and C. Latham. Salisbury; R. J. Ovendon and George Graham, Waihi. CLASSIFICATION OF TEACHERS.
Upon the motion of Messrs. Kennedy and Adlam, the matter of the classification of teachers was referred to the inspectors to enquire into and report at next meeting. GENERAL. The Secretary for Education notified that the Board's application for a grant for the enlargement of the lluiroa school had been acceded to.
In reporting that Mr. McCarlie, teacher of the Tahora and liurimoann schools. had not been present at Hie Tahora schools, and that the committee had received no notice of his intention to resign or absent himself, Mr. W. Ha!Ictt (Tahora) wrote that he understood the teacher was now working with surveyors on the Stratford-Ongarue i«i.wavjine.—lt was decided to leave the jnatter in the chairman's hands. The Hoard approved the appointment of Mr. A. V. Simg as lieutenant in the Ngaere school cadet detachment. Mr. 11. Catton was appointed temporary teacher of the Tahora and lluiimoana schools.
1 The action of the Tongaponitu school committee and the commissioners of the ! Okau school in closing their respective schools for two weeks on account of an epidemic of diphtheria was confirmed. In response to a petition it was decided to call a householders' meeting at the Okau school on 25th September for the purpose of forming a school committee and considering the boundaries of the school district. A long letter from Mr. S. Turkingtrn. headmaster of the Malice school, was allowed to lie on the table. Messrs. Sanderson and Griffiths, h acknowlediing the Board's letter intimating a change in the terms of their appointment, stated that for several reasons they preferred the new agreement and accepted the same with' pleasure. | Mr. T. Harry Penn, secretary of the Stratford District High School committee, wrote asking whether the Board could see iU way to the appointment of a teacher for physical culture clasps ;U the school,
The Board decided that it could not accede to the request. Mr. Ballantyne reported with reference to the application of the Lincoln School committee for new desks, that Mr. Whetter had visited the school and found that some of the desks were out of repair, but though they could be put in order a£ comparatively little cost. He therefore recommended that Mie, matter be deferred until' the working overseer had had an opportunity of approved, The Board adopted Mr. Ballantvne's 1 recommendation that a subsidy be i granted the Hillsborough School com-' mittee on all amounts raised locally | for the purchase of cupboards for scientific apparatus. ]
