The first hockey match. Auckland v. Southland, was played here to-day and resulted in a win .for Auckland by 2 goals to 1.. The ground was somewhat heavy, and this interfered with the mere dashing style of tiie Auckland team. The Aucklanders gave an exposition oi hockey of a standard never before seen in Invercal'gill, the exceptionally clever »tick work being particularly admired. Southland put up a stubborn light, and made the game very fast. Their plav in the field \yas eflective, but within the circle their ability was sadly lacking, and they consequently failed to improve the opportunities which their more knowing opponent*' would have converted into - scores. Some say the score was really three to one. and that tin; referee was deeeivd by reason of a hole in the net which allowed the hall to go through.
