The Argentine steamer Colombia, with excursionists from Buenos Aire* intending to attend the national fetes in Uruguay, when entering Monte outer harbor collided nt six o'clock J n Ihe morning with the North flermr.n Lloyd steamer flchleisen. The former sank, and eighty por«ons, vhieily women nn:l children excursionUts. were, drowned, and seventy, Including the captain, and the bulk of the crew (who numbered 48) were saved. The Schleisen was only slightly damaged. The Colombia was cut in two. The forepart- sank almost immediately, and Ihe aft portion was only a few minutes above water. The majority of the passengers we'e asleep at the time. The panic was terlible.
Small steamers hastened to the scene, but a heavy sea and torrents or rain impeded rescue work. Many of thw.e rescued, the majority ol whom were clinging to the masts, wen* more or less seriously injured. The fetes have been postponed.
