TURF TOPHS. Writes a London correspondent:— More trouble was expected at liaisonsJ.tmtte on Sunday in connection with the strike of stable lads. They did make a demonstration, but a s'tron<» force of police, and the presence of so" tliers, kept them in check, and the meeting passed off happily. Verdun followed up his Grand Prix victory by winning the l'rix Du President d'e la Rel luoliqne, tarrying Bst .'lib, while Seasick, 4yrs, list slb, was - a poor second. Baron M. Rothschilds colt is certainly a "flier,;' and it is well for the English cracks that he is not in the St. Le«er Bayardo, by the way, now looks lik-Iy to start favorite. Mr. Fairlie's coit. has certainly won since running fourth in the Derby and beate n Louviers, which was ,only just defeated by Minora in the Epsom race. All the same, the writer would prefer to take the odds about Minora and William the Fourth and the latter is worth supporting both wavs. .
The most interesting of recent races was the London Cup of 1000 sovs PA miles, at Alexandra Park. There 'were some useful animals among the thirteen running. Arranmare and Mr H P. Whitney's Perseus 111. bcin" anion* thorn. The former was well backed, but tailed to stay, and the spoils looked like going to Menu (belonging to J B Joel) until close home. It "was then seen that Saxby, o„ Mr. A. J. Basset's Hayden, was malting up ground fast, and the son of Avidity—Langour just got there, winning by a neck. Mr. 11. Byroa Moore, secretary of <-V Victoria Racing Club, last week'received a letter from Madame Melba stat'ii" that it was her intention to become-an owner of racehorses, and that her color* should be registered as olive : , m jacket, mauve sash, and white cap.'"".\liss -Murphy. Madame Melba's private sce'etnry, said that Melba had always' been fond of horses, and had been thiiikhm for a long while of tryini; whether lie:' luck would be as good in "this direction as in others. So she had enrolled herself as a patron of horseracing. '-The last time she spoke to me about it." said Miss-Murphy, "was on the ship. o n the way out from England, but I don't think her arrangements are complete even now. Oh. yes. I think she certainly means to race in New Soi.th Wales, as well as in Victoria. Yu't know her son is a very fine rider, and her brother-in-law. Mr. Lempriere, is a member of the Melbourne Hunt Club. Perhaps she will have the luck Mrs. Lsngtry had, or the Duchess of Mo itNo, I don't know what horses she is going to buy, or how many, ~r when she intends to begin racing. You see. I don't fancy her plans are quite made out just yet."
