THE TONGAMKO "HAUL." .By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night, As the result of the seizure ot certain uncustomed goods by the customs oll'icials on the Tongariro on Saturday, Charles' Maurer, barber on the vessel, appeared in the Magistrate's Court this ailernoon, before .Mr. \V. (I. l'iddcll, S.M., charged with harboring uncustomed goods to the value of £7l. The articles consisted of eleven overcoats, sixty-live ostrich feathers, and ten dress pieces. The Tongariro had been previously searched by the Customs, when, on the occasion of her arrival from London, | some of the engineers were brought hefore the Magistrate and lined. Since then the liner has been loading along the coast, and her last port was Wnitara. Mr. I'itzgibbon, for accused, in applying for a remand, intimated Unit defendant's vessel sailed for England on 'Thursday next. Defendant had a goud dcifence'and did not wish to lose his position on the ship. 51 r. C. S. Xixon, Collector of Customs', raised no objection to the request, anil defendant was accordingly remanded, to reappear on Wednesday, lie was admitted to bail in one surety of .CiO. It is understood that a warrant has been taken out. for the arrest of William dolin l'ine, Jiorckeeper on the Tongariro, on a charge also of having harbored uncustomed goods.
