OBITUARY

Christchurch, Last Night.
Georgq Payliug, one of the most p.'Omiiient citizens of Christchurch, who had been in somewhat bad health lor a long time, died suddenly at his residence, near Beafcy Avenue, this afternoon. Mr. Paying had taken a very active interest in the public affairs of Ghristchureii tor many years, and his name was closely associated with the municipal progress of the city. Amongst the pu >iic positions held by Mr. Payling were those of Mayor of Christchurcn, atid chairman of the Xorth Canterbury Hospital Board. Before being elected Mayor lie was for many years a member of the Ohrietchurch Crty Council, and presided as acting-Mayor during Sir John Hali's i'lness at Exhibition time. As a member of the City Council, he did a great deal of excellent work as the chairman oi the Reserves Committee. As Mayor be enterf# with great vigor and enthusiasm into! the movement which, largely through lis efforts, resulted in the inauguratiqh of the high-pressure water supply system, which is now being installed in the city and suburbs. On the Hospital Board, where probably he dil most of his public work, he showed very sympathetic feeling towards the scheme for the establishment of a consumptive sanatorium, and in other ways he did much to help those in He was also intimately associated with the administration of the sport of trotting in Christchurch, and as chairman of the New Zealand Trotting Association did good work. At the recent election, he was accorded a seat upon the Tramway Board.

( Wellington, Last Night'. A special meeting of the executive of the Wellington Employers' Association was held to-day to consider the question of a successor to the 'ate Mr. S. Brown, the employers' representative on the Arbitration Court. It was unanimously resolved that the advisory board be requested to recommend the Industrial Union of Employers to nominate Mr. VV. Scott, of Dunedin, as the mi plovers' representative, if he will con£tut lo nomination.
RAILWAY HATES FOR SHOW EXHIBITS. Dtfnedin, Last Night. A deputation from the Otago A. and I'.. Society waited on the Hon. J. A. Millar to-day in support of a resolution recently carried at the Agricultural Conference to the effect-that all exhibits | consigned to the show should without certificates be carried at quarter rates, ind that nil such exhibits or part thereof, if. retjjrnscl to the original sending station within a stated time, be also charged quarter rates, returningstock to he consigned by the Association at whose show the stock was exhibited, such Association to be responsible to tile Railway Department that only original exhibits or parts thereof are returned. The Minister said he considered the proposal reasonable and businesslike, and seeing that the alteration sugar csifil would not affect the railway rcWlrae he would endeavor to meet the ivishes of the associations.
