ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS
TilE BRISBANE MEETING. NEW ZEALANDERS' SUCCESS. ByCable.—P.- Association.—Copyright Received 18, 11.45 p.m. Brisbane, August 18. The Australian Amateur Athletic Carnival commenced in the Exhibition grounds. The weather was showery and the ground h<?avy. The attendance v. as good. The championship events were contested by representatives cf i live states. Results:— I
Three-mile Running Championship--M. Dickson (Canterbury, New Zeuland) 1, Blake (Victoria) 2, Suffren (Victoria) 3. Among the other starters were Richardson and .Sponle (Victoria), Lynch and Fitzsimmons (New SouJi Wales), MeKnight and Moore (New Zealand). A good start. Dickson, McKniglit, Blake and Suffren took charge at the start. At the end of a mile and a-half, Dickson was leading, the others being spread out. Dicktion, who ran strongly throughout, won easily by 150 yards. Suffr?n Ml yards awav third. Time, 15 mill 21 4-osec. Dic-ksou and Blake secured standard time certificates.
220 yds Championship (final) —W. A. Woodger (New Zealand) 1, Ellis (Victoria) 2, Barker (New .South Wales) !). Woodger ran second i'.. his heat but in the final went off likv, a gun, and was never troubled, winning easily by a couple of yards. Time. 23 1-iisec. Pole Vault Championship of Australasia—L. M. McKay (Wellington, New Zealand) and Walker (Victoria) divided the championship, each clearing 10ft 3in. Molloy and Frawley (Queensland) cleared 10ft and received standard certificates.
Three-mile Walking Championship—--11. E. Kerr (Taranaki, New Zealand) 1. Harley (New South Wades) 2, Winters (New South Wales) 3. Six Starters. Kerr moved to the front, continued to draw out' from the field, and finished with a lot to spare, winning from Harley by 150 yards. Winters 220 yards further back, Corigan (Queensland) fourth. Corben (New South Wake) and Brown /(Queensland) wfcre .lamped by Kjerr, Time, 22rain 2 2-oaec. Kerr and Harley were awarded standard time certificates.
Half-mile Running Championship of Australasia Wheatley (Victoria) 1, Swain (Queensland) 2, Bryce (Queensland) 3. Fourth others started. Wheatley took, the lead at the last lap and won comfortably by twenty yards. Time, 2min 1 3*s«ec.
Running Broad Jump Championship— G. P. Keddell (Now Zealand) 21ft, Moyes (Queensland) 21ft 2in, Smith (New South Wales). 20ft, were left in the Una I, which will be decided on Saturday. 440 yds Hurdles Championship—G. P. Keddell (New Zealand] 1, Or r (Queensland) 2, Jlaher (Queensland) 3. Agnew (Tasmania) and Frawley (Queensland) altso started, lieddell, who was one of the first away, cleared the hurdles well, followed by Orr, and, drawing out at the finish, won by twenty yards in lmin 3sec.

At the annual meeting of the Otago Centre of ithe New Zealand Athletic Union, a motion was carried expressing the opinion that 'the "Unioni »houilm assume, isontroll of cycling, and that the executive 'be asked to take the matter into consideration. A deputation from the Vipers' ami Dancers' Association waited 011 the Centre with reterence to the question of handing over «onti<ol of the piping and dancing to tile Association. The meeting decid d that it could not see its way to recommend that control be handed over as asked.
