RAILWAY FACILITIES.
WEEK-END TICKETS REFUSED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Wednesday. The Minister of Railways has replied io the resolution, adopted at the recent Chambers of Commerce Conference in reference to the issue of week-end tickets on the New Zealand railways. He says that experiments made by the Department in various parts of the Dominion in issuing cheap tickets in conl.eetion with the half-holiday movement, from the large centres to places' of interest within reasonable distance, at very low rates, did not turn out a financial success. .. .Tile ordinary rates for travel in this country are so low that tlicv form no bar whatever to those people who have time or desire to journey by rail. The Department also issues at frequent intervals holiday excursion and day excursion tickets at rates much below the ordinary taiiff. The people of the Dominion have great facilities for railway travel, and have no cause for complaint in regard to tho rates they pay. In these circumstances he cannot sec his way to comply 'with the conference's request.
