Mr. A. E. Remington, M.l\ for Kangitikei, died yesterday morning. Mr. G. T. Murray* District lloud Engineer, left Xcw Plymouth yesterday morning for Tc Kuiti, to take over control of the Te Kuiti South district.
Mr. Harry IPhydora, the comedian who was so successful in the title-role in ".Mother Goose," has lieon engaged for the pantomime "Aladdin" to be staged by Mr. J. C. Williamson at Christmas. Miss' Amy Castles, the famous singer, lias returned from England, and will commence an Australasian tour at Melbourne next week. The company supporting Miss Castles is a. particularly strong one, and includes Mr. Peter Dawson, a popular London basso; Mr. Andrew N'icol, tenor; Mr. Victor Busst, solo pianist; and Master Awadia, a young Victorian flautist. The Hon. .lames Carroll, Acting-Pre-mier, \ras tendered a complimentary social last night at Gisborue. The gathering (slates a Pies'* wire) was of a nonParty nature, and an address expressing pleasure that the district had been honored by Mr. Carroll's appointment to so higli an ollice was presented, and complimentary speeches were made. The Acting-Premier replied in a characteristic ami eloquent >'piwh. lull the function being cliielly social he did not touch on noMtical ssues.
The linker University, .Kansas, • has conferred the .honorary degree of Master of Arts upon Mr. Yung Wang-Hwang, Chinese Consul in Wellington. This is in recognition of his being "a man of higli scholarly attainments*, jof broad human sympathies, proud of his race, devoted to forces of culture and Christi. nnity at work among bis people." Mr. Hwang, after studying at Xanking University, passed through Maker University and Columbia University, New York.
Mr. Arthur Waylv, eldest son of Mr. George Mayly, died at his father's' residence, "Barton,'' Vogeltown, yesterday, in his twenty-lirst year. The deceased had been ill for the past two years, the result of an injury received whilst playing football, lie had given gwat promise in the athletic field, having been a member of tile senior football and cricket teams during the Hist year at Nelson College, lie was a prominent member of thos'e teams until compelled by injuries to retire, lie "had also made his presence felt on the New Plymouth cricket fields, and his deatli will' he -e----gretted by a wide circle of friends.
