Hon. Fowlds yesterday visited the Burnham industrial School. Mr. James Wansbrough, 83 years of age, died at Oainarii yesterday. Deceased was an old colonist and the first plumber in the Oamaru district. A London cable states that Colonel Davies, of the New Zealand defence fortes, will be attached to the staff during the British military manoeuvres in September.
Constable T. Hickman, of Opunake, who lias been on the sick-list for some time, has returned from a holiday in Auckland, and resumes his duties almost immediately. The acting-Premier inspected the Waikohu railway construction works, on which 500 men arc now engaged. He is to be entertained at a social this evening and presented with an ilHuninated address.
Mr. Ernest Wastney, accountant at the Wellington branch of the Natiraal Hank, died yesterday after a long illness. Mr. Wastney was formerly manager of the New Plymouth branch of the National Bank.
.Mrs. K. L. Stevenson, representing the world's W.C.T.U., was expected in Auckland by the Jlokoia on Sunday, where she was to speak in His Majesty's Theatre the same evening. The steamer was late, and she only arrived yesterday morning. Jfrs. Stevenson's dates for New Plymouth are September Ist and 2nd."
The ITon. J. A. Millar arrived here by the first express from the North to-day (says -a Press wire from Dirnedin last night) and will remain until the end of the week. A number of deputations will wait on him, and on Thursday evenin;,' he will be entertained at a social by his election committee. He will proceed to Tiniaru by the 'first express on Saturday, and will go on to Wellington the I same evening. Mr. P. Darey, secretary to the Canterbury Federation of the Industrial Unions and assistant secretary to th--Trades and Labor Council, is relinquish ing these appointments to take up the -position of organiser for the Union of New Zealand Shearers. He leaves for Sydney on Thursday to obtain information as to the Australian workers" union constitution, which has been adopted liy the shearers. He expects to return to Xew Zealand in a month's time, and will then take up organising work in the Xorth Island.—Press wire.
