HOCKEY.
LADIES' TOURNAMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Napier, Last Night. The secretary of the Hawke'a Bay Hockey Association has received the following ten entries in the senior grade for the forthcoming ladies' championship hockey tourndliieut, to be held in Napier and Hastings, commencing on the 20th inst.—Auckland, Taranaki, Wellington, kelson, Hoiowlienna (one team each), Wairarapa. and Ilawke's Bay (two teams each). Owing to the Smallness of entries in the junior grade (3), it has been decided not to hold this competition.
AUCKLAND DRAWS WITH WANGANur. Wanganui, Last Night. The Auckland representative Hockey team played the first match of their tour at Wanganui this afternoon the game ending in a draw. The weather was perfect ami the ground in good order. The attendance was over a thousand. The first spell was in favor of the visitors. ' Smvthe scored I> V following up a shot from a line hit. Auckland were superior in stick play. ]n the second spell Wanganui were showing better combination and kept the visitors on the defence. Solcr scored from a rebound from a mail post. Spear, Cave and Miller were "the pick of the local, team. Auckland's haif !me was excellent. Mather, Barry and Smythe were the best forwards. The visitors were eontipually penalised for obstruction and carrying the ball.
THE CHAMPIONSHIP. • HAWERA WINS THE FINAL. The New Plymouth West hockey team, winners in the northern end, met the southern division winners at Hawcra yesterday afternoon. The team left New Plymouth fairly confident of their ability to secure the honors in this, the final match of the championship series. But the Hawera men were too strong in the back division, and played with too good combination for the* visitors who had to acknowledge defeat by three goals to twe after a hard-fought game Ray Ambury notched the first score, and Sage equalised matters for Hawcra. There were no further points scored in the first, spell. Sage and Ambury each added another in the second spell and Ihomson placed the winning hit for Ha-w-era. Sage's goals were both capital shots, and Ambury's were also well merited points. Just before call of time Hawera had a "life," a hot shot striking the corner of the net. New Plymouth played the latter portion of the second spell without the services of Fa<mn who had to retire owing to an injur? to' Ins leg./ For Hawera, Sage, Thomson and Cook were the best players. The New Plymouth men were very even in their display, no one shining out partieularly Mr. R, B. Anderson, of Stratford, referecd in a most efficient manner.
