IN DAYS OF PROSPERITY

Mrs. Kattierino Cleminons Gould spent a third day in.the witness-chair tit the hearing of her suit for separation and an adequate allowance from her husband, Mr. Howard Gould. Again the court-room was thronged with curious women, who examined and audibly admired and criticised every detail of the plaintiffs dress and appearance.

Mrs. Gould testified that in days of prosperity she rarely wore the same, gown twice, although some dinner drcsecs cost £IOO each. Her servants' pay-roll was' £2OO monthly. She spent other large sums on carriages and motor cars.

She changed her dress at least three times and often four times daily, and each change necessitated a complete new outfit even to the least details Tnis' occupied nearly the whole day, she admitted in cross-examination. For yachting alone she said she had a hundred costumes, each costing from £SO upwards, with a corresponding number ofohats costing from £8 to £l6 each. Her reception gowns cost from £6O to £IOO each,

It is Mrs. Gould's' contention that this mode of life was only suitable, to her station, and that the court should compel her husband to pay for its continuance. "I dressed as Howard Gould's wife should dress," she s'aid, in reply to a question. "It would he distinctly bad form to wear the same gown twice in the same place." In response to another question as to what had become of the discarded gowns she startled Mr. Delancey Nicoll, counsel for Mr. Gould, with the reply: "One of my gowns' wa« given to your own sister, who is on the stage."
