WEIGHT OF BREAD.

DEPUTATION TO THE MINISTER. by Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Monday. A deputation from the executive of the New Zealand Master Bakers' Association waited upon the Minister for Health with regard to. the fancy bread difficulty. It was pointed out that the Act makes no distinction between ordinary loaves and fancy loaves. If the latter' is found to be underweight the seller is liable- to prosecution. This they considered a hardship, seeing that fancy loaves have in most cases to undergo a second baking. They asked that the Act be ametfded in the direction of their being allowed to advertise that such bread would only be delivered on special order; then bakers would not he responsible in regard to full weight. The Minister thought there was a better way out of the difficulty. Subtection 3 of section 2(1 of the Act made the seller responsible for selling underweight bread, ."unless he states its true weight to the buyer at the time of sale." In fact, the Act provided a way out of the difficulty. In selling fancy bread the baker need only inform his customers of its exact weight and by doing so would relieve himself of responsibility. The Department did not care about prosecution. It was anxious to see the Act administered without friction.
