DEATH OF AN OLD MAORI CHIEF

Auckland, Wednesday. Another of the old-time Maori chiefs ■■ has passed away ut Karetu, Bay of Elands, in the person of Honehaaa Te Mauparaoa, at the age of about 80 years. The late chief's father Tc Mauparaoa mis a member of the great Nga. tikahungunu tribe, whose country extended on the East Coast from above Gisborne nearly to the Wairarapa, and who tamo to the Hay of Island,' as an ally of the chief Pomare, whom he accompanied in his ill-fated expedition to I the U'aikato, in which he lost his life. Te Jlauparaoa was one of the few who returned, and he remained at the Bay of Islands, taking part in many of the tribal wars there, and there Ijnnelurnu . was born. Te Mauparaoa, accompanied by Uonehana, started to return to his own country, but, (staying at the Great Barrier, ha peorle were surprised by the Ilauraki natives and defeated. Tc Mauparaoa, his son, and family escaped to the mainland on a vaftpo raft, and

returned to the Bay of Islands, where l.e resided with Pomare at Otihu pa. •icar Opua. When Pomare was made prisoner on the North Star about the time of Ilcke's wiir. aail Otihu pa wan destroyed. Tc Mauparaoa became virtun.ly the leading chief, and conducted ihe inhabitants of the pa inland to the Karetu. where he built a pa and resided until Ins death, on which event his ston Honehnna assumed the leadership of his people and maintained it to his death. He was a fine specimen of the old native, stalwart, heavily tattooed, anil well ' versed in Maori lore, and his evaniple and influence were all for good His death removes one of the fast-diminish-nig links' with the past, and as the old chiefs go it seems as if there were now none to take their places.
