Tc Mauparaoa became virtun.ly the leading chief, and conducted ihe inhabitants of the pa inland to the Karetu. where he built a pa and resided until Ins death, on which event his ston Honehnna assumed the leadership of his people and maintained it to his death. He was a fine specimen of the old native, stalwart, heavily tattooed, anil well ' versed in Maori lore, and his evaniple and influence were all for good His death removes one of the fast-diminish-nig links' with the past, and as the old chiefs go it seems as if there were now none to take their places.
