THE CRADLE OF THE DEEP.
On one of the battleship Dreadnought's recent calls at Malta a seaman diver was sent below to clear the leviathan's propeller of some ilotsnm with which it had become entangled. He got down right enough, but iie failed "to return.
As it happened, the rest of the battleship's divers were ashore, and as no answer was received to telephone and life-line signals sent from the deck, grave concern began to be felt by those on board the ironclad. The worst winfeared, and on the appearaiico at the surface of brushes and other tools, the lieutenant in charge sent ashore an urgent message for one of the oth.-r divers. A man came, dressed, and weul below, but only to return at once full of indignation. He said, "That follow'" been asleep!" It was true. Having lunched no! wisely, but too well, Hie lir<t diver an pears to have sat himself so comfortably on one of the giant blades of the Dread.nought's propeller that soon he fell asleep.
