WHIRLWIND AT OAKURA.
Oakura had its sensation on Friday evening, a whirlwind sweeping across the district. At Captain Mace's homestead his shelter plantations received extremely rough handling, many of the pines and gum trees being uprooted and others stripped of limb and leaf. Unfortunately, too, His llower garden was in the line of the devastating hurricane, and his choice shrubs and llowers were smashed and broken. Passing on, the whirlwind played with Mr. Joseph Looney's residence, and stripped it of roofing—an operation that was , hardly pleasing or profitable to the occupants. At Mr. Richardson's trees and outbuildings suffered, and at several other farms the disturbance left its mark. The County Council's toolslied at Oakura shared the violence, being blown over and smashed up.
Saturday opened roughly in tile district, a thunderstorm at close quarters bringing down torrential rains. Then the weather cleared, but intermittent showers fell during the night. From about midday yesterday the j'ain was continuous until night.
