CHRISTCHURCH SITTINGS. By Telegraph.—Presa Association, Christchurnch, July 31. Inspeitor Gillies was the chief witness before the Police Commissi™ to-day. He was of opinion that many men declined to join the force and many men left it disgusted at the way in which the force was held up to ridicult in the public prints. t'hristchurch, Saturday Night. The sittings of the Police Commission in this city were resumed this morning before Commissioner Mr. H. W. Bishoo, S.M. Inspector Gillies complained ol the discredit cast on the force by the misdeeds of a few men. " I feel," he said,
| "so keenly the manner in which the force is held up to public ridicule, that I would be glad if to-morrow I reached the age of retirement. I have always loved the service, and I love it now, but I feel so disgusted that that is 'mv opinion. I have no ncsitation in saying that there are many men in the service who hold similar opinions." Next Wednesday the Commission will sit at Greymouth, and it is expected that one day will be sufficient in that town. The evidence of the police stationed in other parts of the West Coast, Nelson and Marlborough, will be taken at Reefton, Westport, Nelson and Blenheim. From the last-named place the Commission will go to the Wanganui district, then to Napier district, then to Auckland and Thames districts, and will finish in Wellington district.
