LOCAL AND GENERAL.
We are pleased to learn that the local Poultry Society are convening a meeting for next week to- consider tin* suggestion recently made by the "Xews" to throw in their lot with the Agricultural Society in connection with the praposed winter show next yea*. 'Permission fins T»een granted b}' the Colonial .Secretary to have the remains of the late Mr. John Stapleton exhumed ; and r omovod to New Plymouth. The I body will be brought to New Plymouth |on Monday. It is understood that the local organisations are making arrangements for the funeral on Thursday next. The election of it county councillor to 1111 the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr. J. J, Carpenter was held yesterday. The ratepayers showed lack of interest, due hi a large measure, no ilonbt, to the fact that both candidates belonged to one portion of the riding, and no local jealousies stirred up the feeling. Only 238 votes were recorded, and of these the Rev. 35, Allanson received 178 as against Mr. A. George's (it). The former has been declared elect-
ed. Mr. J. B. Hino, M.P., lias just received tli'c following letter from the Hon. D. Buddo:— Referring io your letter of the 2i)th June, concerning the Whakaihuwaka iind TauwatHMahoo blocks ;of land, the matter lias not been lost sight of, and the Commissioner of Crown Lands, New Plymouth, has now suggested suitable areas for bushfelling contracts if it is decided in the near future to find further work for bush-feilers. With regard to the question of roading blocks, this is a matter for the Public Works Department, who are fully alive to the necessity of finding work where possible for the unemployed. Owing to the opening of the Main Trunk line of railway fcheru has been a very great falling-oIF in the passenger list between Ktnv Plymouth and Onehunga, and vice versa. The Eltham | Avgns expects, however, when the novel- \ ty of the train journey wears oil', to ?ee the steamers pick up a good deal • r their passenger trade again. Cerily. those who are not afraid of a a trip will give the -steamers preferliice to the train between, the terminal points of the journey. To start from New Plymouth in the evening and be in Auckland within I*2 hours is rather better than being cooped up for 19 or 20 hours in a railway carriage.
