At the last, meeting of the I'atea 1!, bor Board, the pilot reported that 1. had compared the sounding on the bar of this port for the month of .Tune with those of tlie Wjinga-nui port. The channel over tlie bar was straight, being by W. half \V. from the lighthouse, with about l*2ft depth at high water spring tides (Wanganui lift 4in) and about Sft at high water neap tides (Wanganui 7ft). In Wanganui the average for the month was 10ft during spring tides and 7ft at h igh water dnr" ing neap tides. Soundings "taken on the Patea bar on .Tilly 4tli showed nothing less than 12ft all the way out and in for the full width of about 170 ft. The pilot stated that the soundings he reported had also been reported by the masters of vesselg coming into port. The length of the sea-wall now under construction is 160 ft, and, as it is evident from the pilot's report the wall is greatly improving the harbor entrance, it lias been decided to push on with it for another 40ft. The work will then he suspended till the Board's financial posiiiun improves.
