The Daily News. TUESDAY, JULY 27. THE POULTRY SHOW: A SUGGESTION.
For the first time for some years tip poultry show promoted by the loci] society has been- an unqualified success from every point of view, credit for which must be given largely to the new members of the committee and to an energetic secretary, all of whom infused new life in the society's dry bones. Undoubtedly the success of tip show as a public attraction was due to the fact that the scope of the society's programme was extended in the direction of inducing competitions m noiiie industries, technical work and children's exhibits. I%' popularising the show in these directions, therefore, the society this year attracted to view the poultry exhibits hundreds of people who other wise would not liave troubled to patronise the function. In this way the society lias, to au extent never before realised, justified its existence as an exhibition promoted with the object of encouraging the breeding of high-clas,s poultry. Unless the public can be induced to view the exhibits, the society must be said to wholly fail in its mission. It was therefore gratifying to find this year the society making a genuiin attempt to popularise its annual function, and still further gratifying to observe that the public responded to ths society's efforts. It occurs to us Matt the time is now, opportune to consider the question of amalgamating the poultry show and the proposed winter show of the Taranaki Agricultural Society. At the outset the proposeu * niter show would be greatly assisted, hoth as an attrai iion and from the financial point of view, were it to in elude a comprehensive show of poultry. But so long as the Poultry Society exists as a separate body, it is unlikely that the Agricultural Society would be given to hold an official poultry show. Also, the general entries at tile xcent show were such as would be incorporated in the schedule of a winter show. Tliere is, however, only a limited number of exhibitors from which to draw, and it cn..M not be exI pected that the two shows, within a I I few weeks of each otner, could hope to be patronised by the public if showing largely identical exhibits, The question is one that might be carefully considered by both societies, and we feel sure that were the one to be incorporated witn. the other, there need lie no doubt a3 H to the success from the outset 01 i , Taranaki winter show.
