THE POLICE COMMISSION
Ly Tclcgraph.—Prcss Association. I Cliristchurch, Lust Night. I The I'olice Commission opens in | Cliristchurch to-morrow. Inspector Gil- i lies, in charge of the Canterbury dis- | trict, states that written notice has been sent to every officer in his district informing them 'of the sittings of the Commission. Inspector Gillies has also been notified that the Commissioner (Mr. H. W. Bishop) intends to call him as officer in charge, also the sub-inspect-or and station-sergeant, and as far as possible every sergeant. It' is anticipated that the greater part" of to-mor-row's sitting will bo devoted to hearing evidence concerning allegations made by Constable Connell against Mr. Geo. Laurenson, M.P. Connell will be present and will be cross-examined by Mr. Laurenson on the evidence he gave at Invcrcargill. Mr. Laurenson will also j give evidence and will also call a number of witnesses. The council of the Chamber of Commerce has preferred a request for permission to tender evidence on the question of pillaging, but Mr. Bishop has ruled that this does not come within the scope of the enquiry. The Chamber will, however, be represented by counsel, who will, if opportunity is given, bring the evidence of members of the • Chamber. Representatives of the Wha/f Lumpers' Union also intend to give evidence, and it is |M)ssible that that organisation will be represented by counsel. The secretary of the Commission has received notice from about a dozen constables stating their desire to give evidence.
